Urban Planning

Located in the old industrial town of Port Talbot, Wales, we were assigned to introduce a “science city” on a large vacant site that used to be the home to rail lines bringing the regions coal and steel products to the rest of Wales, UK and Europe. At one point this town was famous for having the world’s largest steel factory. The town lost most of it’s wealth in the mid 20th century and has tried recovering ever since. Sitting on the water was the sites most important aspect. With old shipping docks now closed, the waterfront is underused and mostly ignored.  My solution was to connect the hidden but beautiful canal that feeds into the ocean to the existent waterfront on the other side of the site, by creating a constructed wetland with both housing and working buildings within the park.
